As with all magnets, the strongest magnetism is found at the earthâs poles. Compasses work because the magnet in the compass needle is attracted to the opposite pole of the earthâs magnetic field.
People arenât the only ones who use the earthâs magnetic field for direction. Loggerhead turtles, birds, some fish, and even hamsters use the magnetic field to guide them as they move about the earth. Scientists call this ability magnetoreception. There is a lot we donât understand about magnetoreception and scientists continue to study it.
